Description: Rare manufactured circa 1917 "California Flyer" wood and metal bi-plane toy from the California Crate Co. It has embossed printing on the top wing of the plane that reads; "Patent Applied For, California Flyer, Made by California Crate Co., Santa Ana, Cal." The California Crate Company was a fruit and vegetable folding crate company that expanded in 1916, during World War One, to also make toy wooden airplanes. This information came from the only other one of these planes I could fined that sold and the seller said that it came from "a History of Santa Ana, California publication". The plane is constructed of varnished wood, assembled with small nails, with a metal tail section and metal supported wheels. Stamped on top and bottom wings is a US insignia of a blue circle with red star inside. This antique wooden bi-plane measures 8 1/2" long and has a 6 7/8" wingspan and is in excellent condition.
